Good Food Markets (GFMs) Hub Animator

Part-Time, Contract Position (0.6 FTE)

July – August 2014, with possibility of extension

Hourly Rate: $19.66

The South Riverdale Community Health Centre is a non-profit, multi-service center that provides primary health care, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion to residents of Riverdale and South East Toronto.

The Riverdale Food Working Group (RFWG) is composed of community members and local organizations, including SRCHC, whose mission is to facilitate the building of healthy and equitable food systems, address food insecurity issues and to engage community residents (particularly those marginalized and on low income) to participate in activities that will improve access to healthy and fresh food, while raising awareness about food issues, and offering opportunities for skills development, education, and empowerment.

The RFWG’s Good Food Market Hub Project consists of three Good Food Markets at the South Riverdale Community Health Centre, Eastview Neighbourhood Community Center and the Ralph Thornton Community Center. The Good Food Markets (GFMs) provide fresh, high quality, nutritious and affordable food for purchase at local outdoor markets.

The GFMs Hub Animator is based at SRCHC, reporting to the Manager, Newcomers and Families and working in close collaboration with the RFWG Good Food Markets (GFMs) Committee and RFWG Steering Community. 


  • Attends and participates in the GFMs committee meetings
  • Provides organizational support to the GFMs committee chair
  • Monitors and manages the GFMs budget with the GFMs committee
  • Documents an operational manual for the RFWG Good Food Markets project
  • Produces training guides for the community volunteer workers in collaboration with the leaders at each GFM site
  • Liaises with each of the three community site leaders on a weekly basis
  • Facilitates communication among the three GFMs
  • Provides support to each of the three GFM sites, as needed, in the areas of volunteer coordination, ordering processes, market days, market floats, money recollection with SRCHC petty cash cashier and the distribution plans for Market leftovers
  • Prepares monthly activity reports for the GFMs committee
  • Prepares the final evaluation report for the 2014 GFMs project
  • Helps with the organization of GFMs special events and other duties as determined by the GFMs committee


  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Creative problem solver
  • Skilled group facilitator/experience with popular education methods
  • Knowledge of food security
  • Financial management skills
  • Excellent communication, coordination and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer and social media skills
  • Ability to work independently and be very effective in a team environment
  • Strong networking and information sharing skills
  • Collaborative approach to group/project leadership
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Experience working within an anti-oppression, inclusive environment
  • Demonstrated experience with community development projects
  • Knowledge of safe food handling; Food Handling Certificate an asset
  • Knowledge of the Riverdale community essential
  • Second language skills an asset

A police clearance letter completed within the past twelve months will be required prior to commencing employment.
