About RFWG

The RFWG is composed of community members and organizations striving to make Riverdale a food friendly and food secure neighbourhood.

Our mission is to facilitate the building of healthy and equitable food systems, address food insecurity issues, and to engage community residents (particularly those marginalized and on low income) to participate in activities that will improve access to healthy and fresh food, while raising awareness about food issues, and offering opportunities for skills development, education, and empowerment.

RFWG activities are based on the following pillars of food security:

  • availability – consistent availability of sufficient quantities of food
  • accessibility – having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet
  • acceptability – access to food obtained in ways that do not compromise people’s dignity, self-respect and human rights, and are produced in environmentally sustainable ways

RFWG Action Groups

The Food Access Action Group develops programs that raise awareness about food security issues, and organizes activities that improve access to fresh, healthy and local food to those most vulnerable in our community.  More information on the group.

The Food Education Group organizes workshops that focus on food education through gardening, healthy eating, food preserving and much more. Most workshops are hands-on and participatory in nature as we strive to learn from one another. We meet as a whole group to share ideas and create a schedule of events and individual members are encouraged to take the lead on organizing workshops.

The Food Education Action Group uses innovative ways to connect knowledge about food and foodways with bigger picture issues (like the environment), and make them accessible to all Riverdale eaters. By sharing and learning together, we build stronger communities. Want to know more? Read on.
